I’m not going to lie… I’ve been really lacking motivation recently. Not just for the blog, but for virtually everything in my life. I thought I was okay. I could see light at the end of the tunnel, and I still can, but it feels like we’re wading through treacle trying to get there.
I’ve been really quiet on here, and that’s partly because with everything that’s been going on in the wider world, writing on a travel blog seems pretty irrelevant – plus there has been a focus and importance in listening to other voices, and I wanted to take a step back.
I’m still focusing on the positives and counting my blessings, but with every week that goes by, I can feel a weight pressing down on me that little bit harder, in my life and on the world in general. Next week is going to be really tough; we should be getting married on Saturday with all our friends and family around us. We’ve finally re-booked it (a year today!) but with it are mixed feelings as we think of how far away that is (it wasn’t even a year away when we booked the original date!) and also think of those who will no longer be able to celebrate with us.
One thing I have extremely thankful for, even though I’ve barely been leaving the house, is the fact we live in Edinburgh, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I would say “in my opinion” but literally EVERYONE I know who has been here holds that opinion, and really, at what point does it become fact? 😉
So today, I want to share some of my favourite photos of Edinburgh. Here are 50 of them, so hopefully you can see what I mean. Many of these have been taken in lockdown, as I am fortunate enough to be able to walk around the city, and it’s been pretty incredible seeing it without the crowds on gorgeous, sunny days.
Edinburgh Castle from the top of the Vennel – it might just be my favourite view of the castle!Victoria Street in lockdown – it’s my favourite street but I’ve NEVER seen it empty before! The Royal Mile in lockdownDean VillageThe Meadows during cherry blossom seasonDean VillageEdinburgh Castle from Princes Street gardensEdinburgh Castle through the cherry blossomsThe Royal MileVictoria Street in all its coloursEdinburgh CastleSt Giles Cathedral, The Royal MileA unique view of the Christmas marketsFireworks over Scott Monument (I lied – this isn’t Hogmanay, I think this was from Fringe Festival!)Circus Lane – Edinburgh’s most instagrammable street! One of the cutest houses in the city!!Scott Monument on a bright, sunny dayNot forgetting our local hero, Greyfriar’s Bobby! The dog who visited his master’s grave every day until he died (you can visit Bobby’s grave in the graveyard too, lots of people leave him sticks)Photo taken from Edinburgh’s main shopping street – not a bad view for a high street!Dean VillageThe Shore, Leith – our neighbourhood!Walking along The Shore in LeithCalton Hill at sunsetView over the city from Camera ObscuraSome pretty doors in the city centreJust when you thought Edinburgh didn’t have it all – it even has superb beaches! Portobello is a favourite local haunt.View of the castle from GrassmarketChristmas markets in EdinburghThe view over Victoria StreetYet another photo of Scott Monument!A cemetery enjoying a view of Arthur’s Seat – oh yeah, did I mention Edinburgh has a volcano?Christmas markets – a controversial feature of Edinburgh, but I love them!Christmas at the Botanics – a light tunnel, of course!Hogmanay – one of the biggest New Year celebrations in the world!Dean VillageDean Village from the other sideDean VillageYet another photo of Dean Village! Can you tell I like it there?Just outside the city, but one of the most iconic bridges in the UK – Forth Rail BridgeBit of a different one here but Edinburgh Zoo does absolutely loads of great things for conservation, and they have two pandas on loan in an effort to breed them – it’s the only place you can see pandas in the UK, and indeed one of the few places in Europe! One of my favourite places to walk around – Greyfriar’s KirkyardThe Royal Mile on a rainy dayNo, YOU take too many photos of Scott MonumentThe MoundChristmas at The Dome is a sight to behold! The Dome is even more spectacular inside!Fringe is one of the most fun times to visit – the streets are full of performers and artists!Just outside Edinburgh but still part of the city – gorgeous South QueensferryTorchlight procession – this kickstarts the Hogmanay celebrations on December 30th!And finally, a “different” view of Circus Lane in Stockbridge
In case you couldn’t tell – I LOVE photographing Edinburgh! And, erm, especially Dean Village and Scott Monument, apparently. But I can’t help it when they’re just so photogenic.
Hope things are well wherever you are in the world, and that you’re managing to explore your local area a bit, too.

Oh, Edinburgh is so lovely! I only had a brief visit almost five years ago, and your photos make me want to return for a second chance, especially in the warmer months! Hope you have a wonderful wedding, and stay safe!
All of your photos are stunning and really do capture the beauty of Edinburgh perfectly! So odd to see the streets empty. I’ve only been once but fell in love with it determined to live there one day hopefully. I’m so sorry to hear you had to postpone your wedding but it will be something positive to look forward to! ☺️
Thanks so much! Yeah it’s been really strange when I’ve been into town and nobody’s around. It’s kinda nice being able to experience it like that though, weirdly. So glad you love it here, and if you ever do look at moving I’m happy to help! 🙂
Good to hear from you, Clazz. I was out of it for awhile too. Stunning shots of the city – what’s not to like about Edinburgh – and, in the circumstances, possibly historic in years to come. I need to explore Dean Village when we’re next there…
These are such great photos, I retweeted this post on Twitter! I should take more photos of my home city too. I’m trying to embrace my time at home this summer before it gets cold and gloomy here again!
Edinburgh has been my home for last 10 Years. I only came to London on a short stint, but already miss being home! It is definitely one of the most beautiful cities to live in! Your pictures took me back to so many memories I had there.
Urgh. I am so sorry about all the rubbishness of 2020. It is not really surprising you’ve been losing your motivation with everything that is going on. I am just glad that you managed to rebook your wedding, and I really hope you’ll get to Japan at some point.
Now, I am LOVING these Edinburgh photos – especially with all those blue skies! It is pretty strange to see the normally empty streets so empty though!
Thank you so much Josy. ❤ Here's hoping we get to Japan next year. And yeah I LOVE seeing Edinburgh on bright, sunny days! I think it makes such a difference. 🙂
Fabulous photos, excellent selection really showing just how amazing Edinburgh is. Such an historic and interesting city. We’ve been a few times but still not scratched the surface in seeing it all.
Wow, beautiful photos! Sorry to hear about all your cancelled plans but glad to hear that you’re safe and healthy and hanging in there along with the rest of us.
I’m so sorry you’ve had to re-schedule your wedding due to the current state of the world. It’s wonderful you can find joy and comfort from your city during this difficult time. Edinburgh really has everything! One of my favourite places in the world.
Beautiful photos, Clazz! Dean Village is gorgeous… one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets? I’ve been to Edinburgh four or five times, and never come across it! LOVE the light tunnel too ☺️ I visited Edinburgh just before Christmas a few years back, and it felt super festive. (Who doesn’t love a good old Christmas market?!)
Thank you! Haha it’s funny because it seems to be half way between a staple stop and a hidden gem! I think it’s a big “Instagram” place, but unless you’ve seen it somewhere, you wouldn’t think to go there (same with Circus Lane). It’s only about a 10-15 minute walk from Princes Street so you’ll have to check it out next time you’re here! 😉
Your photos says it all and Scotland is HUGE on my bucketlist. I was so close to booking it last year. Thank you for sharing. All the photos are stunning and it’s hard to pick a favourite.
I just know that I should not look at posts like this one at a time when travel is this limited, but it is really hard to stay away. Really nice photos, Edinburgh looks like a beautiful city 🙂
