Surprise – I just returned from ICELAND!!
Yes, after a long, long two and a half years, I finally set foot outside the UK, and I absolutely made the most of every second.
If you follow me on social media, you’ll know about some of the trip already – I went with a friend who is just as crazy as me, and we went snowmobiling, we saw icebergs, we bathed in hot springs, we walked around the rim of a crater, we explored an ice cave inside a glacier (!!), we stayed in a Viking themed hotel and we chased waterfalls all over the place.
I’ve got a lot to write about, but I’m still catching up with writing about UK adventures, so I thought I’d ease back into international posts gently with this photo post.

It’s no secret that Iceland is full of some of the best scenery on earth. It’s other-worldly, it’s encompassing, and it’s absolutely stunning.
It took me a while to decide exactly what to focus a single photo post of Iceland on – everything I could think of, I want to write about separately and in more depth. I prefer my Photo Friday posts to be about something that I might not really write about on the rest of the blog, or a theme that ties a lot of photos together that are scattered all over the blog.
Then I remembered I took an awful lot of photos from the car.
So behold – one of the most scenic road trips I’ve taken! Unfortunately I don’t know exactly where most of these are so I can’t caption them properly, but I know what area they’re in, determined by the photos around them in my folder.

One of my absolute favourite stops by the road, this was some time after we turned off towards Snaefellsnes. I loved this view of the Icelandic ponies to the left, and if you look closely, there’s a gorgeous wee church off to the right. Such a picturesque scene!

One good thing about moody days that can’t decide what they’re doing? Amazing lighting!

Recognise this mountain? Trust me, there will be lots more photos to come of Kirkjufell… from off the road!

Now, I’m gonna stop right here and tell you something.
All of the above photos are from our FIRST DAY.
OF FIVE DAYS.
I almost left it here, because Snaefellsnes is one of the most picturesque areas I’ve ever seen! I knew of the famous images of Kirkjufell and its pretty waterfalls, and of the rock arches by the coast, and the cute black church. I was not expecting THIS.
Anyway, I’ve decided to carry on the post with a handful of photos from the days that followed.

Because the south coast of Iceland is something else ENTIRELY.

Just to confirm – that is not the sea. That is a mothereffing GLACIER.

And these are more glaciers!

And, because we saw endless waterfalls from the road that I didn’t get photos of (or at least not ones that were completely blurred beyond obscurity!), here’s one of the most famous of them all, from a slightly different perspective.

I suppose this is sort of cheating as it’s actually from the car park, but this is Seljalandsfoss – the famous waterfall you can walk behind!
I’m SO excited to share more from our trip! We had the absolute best time, no holds barred after being locked inside our own country for so long.

Iceland is truly one of the most naturally-beautiful places on this Earth. My visit there three years ago left a notable impression on me, and I hope to return someday to actually drive the Ring Road and explore east of the country. No international trips for me this year, but I’ve already booked to go somewhere overseas in 2022!

Yes, I’d love to drive the whole ring road too! That was actually my plan for whenever I made it back there, as Ash and I have always talked about going back in the summer. Anyway, this visit happened first instead! Excited to hear about your 2022 plans. 😀

I’m SO happy you were able to get away after so much lockdown. And it appears you got your trip in just under the wire – who knows what’s going to happen with this new variant, which is our concern as we prepare to come to England in about 3 weeks. Looking forward to reading more posts about Iceland!

Wow, I am jealous! I think I will have to keep Iceland on the top of my list for places to visit once I get back to travelling next year.

I definitely recommend it! We visited briefly in 2013 and I’ve always listed it in my top 3 countries while also thinking, “but can I really list it that high when I’ve barely seen it?” Anyway, can confirm. Top three countries. (Vietnam, Canada & Iceland, in case you’re wondering!)

If these are the photos from the car, I can only imagine the posts coming up. What a stunning landscape, so excited to read more about your adventures in Iceland.

I spent 16 days in Iceland. It was just crazy, like another planet. We were there in the dead of summer, so lots of daytime. Did you see the aurora?

Aw 16 days sounds bliss! We’re planning to go back in the summer, the longer days would make such a difference and there are so many different activities you can do in summer vs winter. We did see the aurora but it wasn’t very strong so didn’t see much movement! Got a couple of decent photos though. 🙂
