Photo Friday: Iceland From The Road

Surprise – I just returned from ICELAND!!

Yes, after a long, long two and a half years, I finally set foot outside the UK, and I absolutely made the most of every second.

If you follow me on social media, you’ll know about some of the trip already – I went with a friend who is just as crazy as me, and we went snowmobiling, we saw icebergs, we bathed in hot springs, we walked around the rim of a crater, we explored an ice cave inside a glacier (!!), we stayed in a Viking themed hotel and we chased waterfalls all over the place.

I’ve got a lot to write about, but I’m still catching up with writing about UK adventures, so I thought I’d ease back into international posts gently with this photo post.

It’s no secret that Iceland is full of some of the best scenery on earth. It’s other-worldly, it’s encompassing, and it’s absolutely stunning.

It took me a while to decide exactly what to focus a single photo post of Iceland on – everything I could think of, I want to write about separately and in more depth. I prefer my Photo Friday posts to be about something that I might not really write about on the rest of the blog, or a theme that ties a lot of photos together that are scattered all over the blog.

Then I remembered I took an awful lot of photos from the car.

So behold – one of the most scenic road trips I’ve taken! Unfortunately I don’t know exactly where most of these are so I can’t caption them properly, but I know what area they’re in, determined by the photos around them in my folder.

One of my absolute favourite stops by the road, this was some time after we turned off towards Snaefellsnes. I loved this view of the Icelandic ponies to the left, and if you look closely, there’s a gorgeous wee church off to the right. Such a picturesque scene!

One good thing about moody days that can’t decide what they’re doing? Amazing lighting!

Recognise this mountain? Trust me, there will be lots more photos to come of Kirkjufell… from off the road!

Now, I’m gonna stop right here and tell you something.

OF FIVE DAYS.

I almost left it here, because Snaefellsnes is one of the most picturesque areas I’ve ever seen! I knew of the famous images of Kirkjufell and its pretty waterfalls, and of the rock arches by the coast, and the cute black church. I was not expecting THIS.

Anyway, I’ve decided to carry on the post with a handful of photos from the days that followed.

Because the south coast of Iceland is something else ENTIRELY.

Just to confirm – that is not the sea. That is a mothereffing GLACIER.

And these are more glaciers!

And, because we saw endless waterfalls from the road that I didn’t get photos of (or at least not ones that were completely blurred beyond obscurity!), here’s one of the most famous of them all, from a slightly different perspective.

I suppose this is sort of cheating as it’s actually from the car park, but this is Seljalandsfoss – the famous waterfall you can walk behind!

I’m SO excited to share more from our trip! We had the absolute best time, no holds barred after being locked inside our own country for so long.
