Photo Friday: Postcards From Haworth, A Yorkshire Gem

Following on from my Yorkshire road trip blog, I realised I have a ton of pretty photos from Haworth… but I definitely did not spend long enough there to write about the place.

I am about to leave on a VERY exciting trip (can you guess where??) so I won’t be posting for a few weeks and thought I’d leave you with an easy photo post.

I present to you: postcards from Haworth.

Haworth is mostly famous for one thing: it’s where the Brontë sisters lived for most of their lives. You can visit their old home, see their old school, eat lunch in what used to be the post office where they sent off their manuscripts, and even do a lovely walk through the inspiration for Wuthering Heights.

I mostly wanted to get photos of the gorgeous high street sloping down through the Yorkshire valley, but as it turned out, all the shops, alleyways and even the square at the top were just as pretty, if not even more so!

I whiled away some of the morning just wandering before breakfast – before everyone else was up too, so I had the place virtually to myself, save for the odd cyclist or dog walker. It was perfect!

Here are some of my favourite shop fronts (not actually including one of the best-named record shops I’ve ever seen – Never Mind The Brontës!).

I love that this is called Menswear and then ladies are just tacked on.

Alright, let’s get more of an overview of Haworth.

Once you reach the top of the high street, this gorgeous square awaits, with alleyways leading off in all directions.

I had to make a beeline for the Brontë house down one of them.

I also went into the church graveyard as there’s a big sign about the Brontë family – but it’s just telling you that they’re not actually buried in the graveyard; they are in the crypt of the church itself! There’s also a memorial for one of the family’s close friends.

Back to the alleyway…

Eventually, I had to go back to our hotel at the bottom of the street to get breakfast, although not before taking a few photos of adorable houses!

Yep, Haworth high street isn’t just pretty shops and restaurants.

And one from the night before – this isn’t where we stayed but it’s next door, and isn’t it adorable?!

FYI – we stayed in the Old Registry Guest House next door!

Finally, after breakfast we headed down to the train station to try and see the first steam train of the day puffing through the town. Haworth is on the Keighley and Worth Valley Heritage Railway line, and it’s one of the most popular stops. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful as it was so cold that the train tracks needed to be de-iced and the train was severely delayed! Welcome to the UK, where even heritage steam trains don’t run on time.

It would have been the perfect end to our short time in Haworth, but no matter – we did check out the train station itself, which is lovely.

Haworth has got to be one of my favourite towns in England. It’s got the perfect mix of everything – an interesting history, a gorgeous high street, wonderful independent shops, lovely hotels, a steam train, and of course friendly locals. It’s exactly what you imagine a nice, traditional English town to be.

There are some great pubs too – we couldn’t get into the popular Fleece Inn, but we ended up having dinner in Haworth Old Hall which was fantastic with some interesting decor and lovely staff.

Not only that but it makes a perfect base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and the surrounding towns and villages. It’s somewhere I’d return to in a heartbeat – if just to find that elusive train!
